What is the Tamil Pudhalvan Scheme?
The Tamil Pudhalvan Scheme, launched by the Government of Tamil Nadu under the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department, offers a monthly financial assistance of ₹1,000 to eligible male students pursuing higher education. This initiative, introduced in August 2024 following the success of the Pudhumai Penn Scheme for girls, aims to encourage students who studied in government or government-aided Tamil medium schools from 6th to 12th grade to continue their post-secondary studies without financial strain
Who is Eligible?
To be eligible, applicants must be male residents of Tamil Nadu who completed their education from the 6th to 12th standard in a government or government-aided Tamil medium school. They must also be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree, diploma, polytechnic, or ITI course. Students from private schools are not eligible. This support is specifically targeted at students whose Aadhaar-linked bank accounts will be used to receive the monthly stipend.
Documentation Required
Applicants are required to upload a clear passport-sized photograph along with their Aadhaar card as identity proof. Educational certificates from Class 10 and Class 12, proof of current enrollment in a recognized post-secondary course, and bank account details linked to their Aadhaar are essential. They may also need caste certificate, proof of Tamil Nadu residence, EMIS/UMIS number, and possibly a college approval letter .
How to Apply Online
Your college or institution’s nodal officer will provide your UMIS/EMIS ID and password. The password is generally the last four digits of your registered mobile number combined with your date of birth Visit the Tamil Nadu University Management Information System (UMIS) portal, which hosts the Tamil Pudhalvan Scheme application form. You can log in using the credentials provided by your institution
After logging in, locate the Tamil Pudhalvan Scheme application section on the portal. Fill in all personal, educational, and bank details accurately. Upload the required documents, double-check your inputs, and submit the application form digitally Once submitted online, take a printout of the application form along with copies of the uploaded documents. Submit these hard copies to the nodal officer at your college or institution for verification.
Verification and Disbursement
The nodal officer will verify your application and forward it to the Social Welfare Department. Once approved, the stipend of ₹1,000 per month will be directly transferred to your Aadhaar-linked bank account As of mid-2025, approximately 3.28 lakh male students are receiving ₹1,000 monthly under the Tamil Pudhalvan Scheme. The scheme’s budget for 2025–26 stands at an estimated ₹420 crore.
